Why Don't We Communicate?

Even in very close relationships today, there are often a great deal of important things that are left unsaid, and simply fester under the surface until they may even ruin relationships entirely. Or simpler issues may simply be botched because clear and open communication is simply not present. Why do we do this to each other?
